Hypnosis: Myths
Thanks to the wrong depiction of hypnosis on television, novels and movies, people have come to think of it as something evil that emanates from perverse mindset. Contrary to such a fallacious notion, hypnosis is extremely beneficial in the overall development of the personality of an individual and in the cure of certain ailments. Due to its largely beneficial results, it becomes imperative to dispel all the myths associated with hypnosis.
Myth#1: I can be brainwashed/mind-controlled when hypnotized.
Fact: No one can brainwash you until you agree at some level to get brainwashed and succumb to the diktats of the hypnotist. The hypnotist has as much power as you give to him voluntarily. He/She cannot force his commands on the subject.
Myth#2: I will fall asleep when hypnotized.
Fact: Hypnosis is just a natural state of physical relaxation and actually heightened mental alertness. Though derived from the Greek word, meaning ‘sleep’, hypnotic subject is relaxed yet alert and always aware at some level. In fact, if you fall asleep, how can you follow the instructions of the hypnotist?
Myth #3: You cannot hypnotize me. I am not weak minded.
Fact: Everyone who possesses reasonable intelligence levels with perceived ability to concentrate and allows himself/herself to slip in a trance state can be hypnotized. Of course, if you are not willing to get hypnotized, no amount of force can make you succumb against your wishes.
Myth #4: I will be stuck in hypnotic state forever.
Fact: You can never get caught in a permanent hypnotic state. If the hypnotist stops talking for some time, the mind of the subject automatically breaks the hypnotic spell.
Myth#5: Hypnosis is a panacea.
Fact: While it’s true that hypnosis can be of immense help in a number of ailments, yet it won’t be appropriate to label hypnosis as panacea. Still a lot of research is required to realize the true benefits of hypnosis.
